IPads, electronic textbooks, and apps are essential learning tools at Prep. If you have questions about advanced or honors courses, please speak with the department chair at Registration Night or contact them by email after that event. In general, only students with a consistent A-average in 7th and 8th grades and high entrance exam scores will be recommended for these classes. The preliminary recommendation to place a student in advanced or honors courses is determined by the entrance exam scores and a review of grade school records. See the previous tab regarding information on placement exams. Please note that taking advanced or honors math and world language courses require an additional placement exam to ensure that your son is challenged at the right level. If two recommendations are listed in the same subject, your son is recommended for the higher honors course but has the option to take the lower course as well. If your son is recommended for advanced or honors courses in math, science or English, that information will appear on PowerSchool when making course selections. A calculator is permitted for the geometry exam but not for algebra.Ī final recommendation will be shared with you by email in mid-May. Students may attempt the two subject area exams in one day but must begin the second exam by 4:40 p.m. Students should arrive as soon as possible after their school dismisses and enter through the main entrance on the west side of the building. The placement exams are scheduled on April 5 and April 12 at 3:30 p.m. Students who have previous academic or life experience in French or Latin should contact the World Language Department Chair Mark Haynes.Students who have previous academic or life experience in Spanish must take a placement exam to be considered for Advanced Spanish I, Heritage Speakers, or a higher course.Students who have taken geometry (as a junior high or high school course) must take a geometry challenge exam after taking our algebra placement exam and have a grade of B or better on their final 8th grade transcript for the opportunity to test out of this requirement at Prep.Students with a preliminary recommendation for Algebra I must take the math placement exam if they want to be considered for the honors courses (416 or 418).It is not unusual for placements to change. Students with preliminary recommendations for Honors Integrated Algebra I and Geometry (416) or Honors Algebra II (418) are required to take the math placement exam to confirm this placement. Students are required to take placement exams for math and world language in these circumstances.
